Chapter Thirty Two

Week 60 on Elgon (Fourth month of Banesfrost, 3004 AB)

As always, the waterfall was to their left, plummeting into what had now become an abyss. Over the past day, they had climbed nearly ten thousand feet! The lake they had first seen upon entering this particular section was all but a distant thing...

…if anyone had cared to glance over the edge!

No one did of course. It was too unsettling; ten thousand feet straight down was enough to unhinge the strongest of constitutions. It took them most of that day to reach the top. By then they had left the waterfall behind feet below, shooting out of a fissure in the wall.

They arrived at the top quite unexpectedly...at least for David.

They had rounded yet another of the stairway’s infinite number of turns, when all of sudden they came upon a small gallery. There was a single arched door. Unlike the others, this one was closed.

“We will spend the night here,” Folca commanded. “Beyond that door is the bridge between the lower and higher stack. We do not want to attempt it when dark.”

“Isn‘t this exciting!” Alma squealed grasping David’s hand.

Folca glared at her.

“You might discover it to be a little too exciting, young lady,” she admonished. “This is not some jaunt on which to have a jolly time...”

Suitably chastised, Alma went silent while throwing a tentative look at David.

They camped that night in a sombre mood. Folca would not be drawn in to saying what awaited them on the other side of the door, and Master Galderon was as equally uncooperative. So Alma and David were left to their own devices. She snuggled up close to him, her head upon his chest dreaming about what they would do after their adventure.

“We shall get married,” she determined much to David’s consternation.

“Alma...I am not sure,” he started to say, but Alma cut him short.

“It makes perfect sense, David,” she insisted. “After last night, you can‘t deny that you don't find me desirable?”

Her voice was a little too loud for saying such things; and David glanced nervously around to see if anyone had been listening. Fortunately, they had not. Master Galderon was dozing in front of the fire; Folca was cleaning her pots while Zorfa was already asleep.

“We shall have to see,” David determined reluctantly.

Alma giggled as she pushed her fingers inside his trousers. “Then I shall have to persuade you, won‘t I?”

“Alma...not here!” David hissed at her quietly.

However, the young woman ignored him and got him quickly aroused. Thankfully, she stopped just as he was about to embarrass himself.

“There you see,” she observed quietly. “It is not difficult, is it?”

From then on, Alma was content to lay her head on his chest and indeed quickly fell asleep.

In the morning, their conversation was all but forgotten as they busily prepared themselves for the second part of the journey. While they waited before the closed door, loaded up with their possessions, Folca declared as she started to grapple with the bolts,

“Do not assume that what we will encounter beyond will be as easy as we have so far experienced.
